Christmas present ideas: phones, tablets and accessories

This is a guest post by Rob Kerr, a contributing editor to the mobile phone comparison site Omio

This time of the year inevitably turns to present shopping for that big day, where avoiding disappointment can often lead to wracking the brain in order to find that perfect gift for a certain someone.

Let us take away the headache, the strain, and any bother, by offering you some choice handsets, tablets and accessories that are ideal gifts for this Christmas time!

Let us start with the top end of the range - the latest and greatest smartphones, with a worthy price tag attached.

This year’s bestseller for Samsung is undoubtedly the Galaxy S3 (£399.99). It comes with a powerful quad-core processor that delivers a fast and responsive Android operating system, with standout features all access to more than 500,000 applications from Google Play app store.

Its 4.8-inch Super AMOLED high-definition display is great for movie watching, web browsing and everything in between.

If you are looking for a lower priced handset, you can’t do any better than the LG Optimus L7 (£169.99).

This sits in the middle of this year’s LG range of handsets, with a 4.3-inch bright NOVA screen and a thinness of 8.7mm.

It also runs on Android and in an almost unchanged version of the mobile operating system; as a result it is responsive and fast - despite being powered by a single-core 1GHz processor.

Tablets have been a popular device this year. Even Microsoft has gotten into the game with its new Windows 8 operating system that’s geared for these large touch-display based devices.

Samsung has incorporated that very platform into a new device: the ATIV Tab (£549.99). This tablet comes with a 10.1-inch 1,366 x 768 screen, runs Windows 8 as well as a touch-friendly version of Microsoft Office.

If that isn't your ideal choice of OS, why not go for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 (£299.99). The Android-driven slate has recently been updated to the newest version of Android, Jelly Bean, putting it on par with the same platform that shipped on the much talked about Google Nexus 7 tablet, a few months back.

If a new product isn't what you are after, but just want something to juice up an existing gadget - why not look toward the Maxell AIRSTASH Wireless USB Flash Drive (£79.89) or the Seagate 500GB GoFlex Satellite Wi-Fi Portable HD (£145.99).

The first has the appearance of a simple USB drive, but is in fact a wireless file store for your phone, tablet or really anything that has Wi-Fi.

It has its own power source and can store and share files from its 8GB of internal storage, which can be expanded from a microSD card.

The Seagate drive works in much the same way as Maxell’s USB effort, only it can natively store 500GB worth of data. It doesn't need to be attached to a power socket either, but it isn't as small and portable as the other product.

These are ideal for those gadgets that can't be expanded with additional memory, such as the iPhone, iPad or HTC One X and Nokia’s Lumia 800...

These are only a few of the choice items that could make worthy presents this Christmas time; why not head on over the Christmas gift guide section for more ideas.
