Problems with display screen on w880i

Hi,

I bought my w880i about a month back and its been mainly great. However after waking from a Friday siesta my phones display screen turned blank. Sort of grey with the 'backlight' still turning on. I pressed a few buttons randomly, as you do, and no change. So I tried my next best idea. I removed the battery then the sim and replaced the battery. Turned it on and again no different. Hmmmm, one more time with the button pressing idea I thought. So popped the battery back in, started her up and theres sign of life. It began by scanning from the top to the bottom of the display. Only displaying a portion of the normal screen, it remained operational. Then progressively, the area of the display began to shrink. Now I'm just left with a flashing, pretty coloured screen :( Anybody know whats going on? I've read the phone maybe trying to repair itself??

Thanks,

Gaz

Seriously mate?  I'd try a software update.  It's not looking good though.  This kind of display (no pun intended) is usually indicative of a damaged LCD or possibly water damaged phone.  Have you checked the little strip of litmus paper on the battery to see if it's registered water?

If the little strip of paper being referred to is found next to the connection for the battery then this is coloured white? Doesnt sound too good from what you're saying though Pete. Thing is, whilst it was scanning down the screen no visible damage to the screen was apparent. Tried the seus update - with no joy. I read about flashing using davinci but reluctant to try for 50 euros. Thought I'd research a little first.

HOLY CRAP!!!  Wait a mo.  The €50 is for unlocking, not flashing.  To flash is €10 or £7.24 or something similar.  It's probably your best option. If you can get the screen to work at all you can check the phone using the selftest.

then go to service tests and main display.  I haven't got a w880 to hand to check the menu but I think service tests is the 3rd option and main display is the first.

EDIT: The white patch is indeed the litmus water test.  White is good, white with pink spots or pure pink and no white is bad.

managed to engage main display test.....Hard to tell exactly whats happening as it's still only displaying about a 1cm strip but from what I can see its displaying numerous coloured squares with some patches being blurred? Litmus seemed good, no pink anyways.

Saved me wasting my money though thanks. Next best step to flash??

Thats really odd , i've had exactly the same problem today , oddly enough are you on O2 ? because when i took my sim out of the phone and stuck it in my old phone , the first thing i recieved was a message from o2 about a update ,  i wonder if this has caused a problem ?!?!?

i had a shop do a flash on it today and it did nothing to remedy the situation , so i called sony ericson and they gave me the details for sending the phone back under warranty , if yours is out of warranty they charge accordingly , the women on the phone said around £40.00 if it was out of warranty.

but you do have exactly the same fault as i now have.......hmmmm very odd.

heres the number for the service center , its a free post address they give you for sending the phone in :-

Unfortunately I have no warranty as I bought the phone 2nd hand from a friend who needed the cash. £40 will be a bit too much to pay for me personally when comparing new phones on the market. Think I'll treat myself to a new phone and hopefully obtain warranty!

Im with t-mobile but cant think of a reasonable explanation for what caused the problem as the phone was just on a table. Same problem happened with my K750i but was knackered anyways. Seems reliability is now the cost for what was a great phone.

 Thanks for the help people.
