The Xperia Z's huge 5 inch display is the most advanced Sony has ever made for a smartphone. It boasts a retina-busting 441 ppi (pixel density), full HD resolution (1920 x 1080) and the new Bravia Engine 2. Plus it has a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio (perfect for watching movies) and multi-touch (up to 10 fingers).

Expect zippy performance with Android Jelly Bean OS, 2GB of RAM, a 1.5GHz quad-core processor (Snapdragon S4 Pro) and 16GB of on board storage. The now obligatory micro SD slot (up to 32GB), NFC, Bluetooth, A-GPS, Wi-Fi and 4G connectivity all make an appearance on the Z.

A 13.1MP camera with Sony's new Exmor RS sensor is flushed on the back while a 2.2MP camera sits on the front. The main camera can record HDR (High Dynamic Range) video and capture HDR images even in low light. Those who have used Sony Cyber-shot cameras will be familiar with Xperia's revamped camera user interface.

The Xperia Z is rugged and tough which is quite unusual for a flagship phone bursting with high end specs. It's IP57 certified which means it can be submerged in up to a metre of water for 30 minutes and is dust resistant. Now you can tweet whilst in the shower!

Battery life is always a crux with any power thirsty, high end smartphones so Sony has tried to overcome this. They've fitted the Xperia Z with a 2,330mAh battery (non-removable) that has a nifty power saving feature called Battery STAMINA Mode. This increases the battery life up to 4 times by killing battery-hungry apps.

All of this cutting edge tech is trimmed down to a slender 7.9mm (thinner than the Samsung Galaxy S3!) and weighs just 146g.
